End of an Era

Authored by Aaron Powell on behalf of the DDD Sydney committee. In Short We, the organising committee of DDD Sydney have made a decision put DDD Sydney on an indefinite hiatus. We’d like to thank the volunteers, sponsors, speakers and especially the community that have supported us over the years. The Longer Version In 2010 I was lucky enough to speak at the first DDD Melbourne event, it was the first event I’d spoken at and I met a lot of awesome people.

CFP Workshop Recap

On Wednesday, the DDD Sydney team ran a CFP Workshop with the goal of helping people increase their chance of having their presentations voted into DDD Sydney. You can download the slides from the workshop here. The DDD Sydney’s CFP (Call for Presentation) is open until the 14th of July, be sure to submit your sessions via sessionize before then! Some of the concepts that were discussed during the workshop on Wednesday are described below.

DDD By Night May 2019 - Recap

Last week we held our first DDD By Night event, continuing on the trend of first from last years DDD Sydney (first Junior Dev track, first Data & Design track, first time selling out) and it was a hugh success, if I do say so myself! 😉 We started the night with a bit of networking and, of course, food! Om nom nom! How good is this food from @cuoncatering #dddsyd pic.

Meet a Speaker Monica and Sophie

Not long now until DDD Sydney 2018 and in the lead up we wanted to make sure you get to know our speakers. Today we wanted to introduce you to not one but two speakers, Monical Ella Regalado and Sophie Gardner, who are co-presenting at DDD Sydney! DDD: What excites you most about being a speaker at DDD Sydney? Monica: I’m excited to make friends and meet other people who are passionate about tech and design.

Meet a Speaker Amanda Dean

Not long now until DDD Sydney 2018 and in the lead up we wanted to make sure you get to know our speakers. Today we wanted to introduce you to Amanda Dean, who’s another interstate speaker, coming up from Melbourne! DDD: What excites you most about being a speaker at DDD Sydney? Amanda: I’m especially excited to be talking about testing at DDD Sydney, which is both my day job and something that I am super passionate about.

Meet a Speaker Rob Crowley

Not long now until DDD Sydney 2018 and in the lead up we wanted to make sure you get to know our speakers. Today we wanted to introduce you to Rob Crowley, who’s one of the DDD Perth organisers and is making the trek over. DDD: What excites you most about being a speaker at DDD Sydney? Rob: First off, I’m really excited to be speaking at my first DDD Sydney.

Meet a Speaker Michael Ridland

Not long now until DDD Sydney 2018 and in the lead up we wanted to make sure you get to know our speakers. Today we wanted to introduce you to Michael Ridland, who spoke at our first DDD Sydney and is making his return this year. DDD: What excites you most about being a speaker at DDD Sydney? Michael: DDD is a community led conference which is accessible to everyone. There’s other great conferences around Australia but many of them are during work hours, plus they’re expensive and not all companies can afford the costs for tickets and time off work, so many people miss out on these valuable networking and learning opportunities.

Meet a Speaker Michael John Pena

Not long now until DDD Sydney 2018 and in the lead up we wanted to make sure you get to know our speakers. Today we wanted to introduce you to Michael John Pena, aka MJ, who’s Readify’s resident Blockchain expert. DDD: What excites you most about being a speaker at DDD Sydney? MJ: DDD Sydney has been well known to be a technology event where community is at its core. It’s where you meet passionate people talking about the topics they really care about.

Meet a Speaker Nelly Sattari

Not long now until DDD Sydney 2018 and in the lead up we wanted to make sure you get to know our speakers. Today we wanted to introduce you to Nelly Sattari, who’s part of the first Junior Dev track we’ve run at DDD Sydney. DDD: What excites you most about being a speaker at DDD Sydney? Nelly: “DDD Sydney is one of the most unique conferences in Australia”. Why is DDD unique?

Meet a Speaker Justin Yoo

Not long now until DDD Sydney 2018 and in the lead up we wanted to make sure you get to know our speakers. Today we wanted to introduce you to Justin Yoo, who has spoken at DDD Sydney every year since 2016! DDD: This is your third time at DDD Sydney, what’s your secret? Justin: At //Build 2016, Microsoft announced Azure Functions, Microsoft version of serverless counterpart against AWS Lambda. When I first saw that, I was sure that it would become very popular soon.

Meet a Speaker: Damian Brady

Not long now until DDD Sydney 2018 and in the lead up we wanted to make sure you get to know our speakers. Today we wanted to introduce you to our Keynote Speaker, Damian Brady. Us: You’re keynoting DDD Sydney this year, excited or scared? Damian: I get excited by speaking to people about things I’m excited about. There are always some nerves, no matter how often you speak, and maybe a few more this time given Machine Learning isn’t really my area of expertise.

2018 Agenda

After a couple of weeks of intense voting we’re excited that the agenda for DDD Sydney 2018 is finally live! This year DDD Sydney received a staggering 128 sessions from 73 speakers. To put that in perspective, we only had 61 sessions submitted to the 2017 event, that’s a two fold increase on last year, and we only had space for 1 additional track, our Junior Dev track. It’s always hard as an organiser to send the emails when sessions don’t make it, and this year many great sessions by many great speakers didn’t make the cut 😦.

Talks I want to hear by Michelle (@_michelleerica)

My name is Michelle and I’m one of the junior devs organising DDD Sydney’s new junior track. I’m a career changer, new to tech and keen to create an inclusive space for my fellow juniors to share, learn and meet each other. I’m going on holiday and while I’m away, the call for presentations for DDD Sydney will close. In an attempt at time travel/getting what I want, I’m putting the following list of talks out into the universe and hope people out there actually submit them to DDD Sydney’s junior track.

🤘 CFP Workshop Wrap up

You might’ve seen that we hosted our first CFP workshop on the weekend and in short, it was a lot of fun! But not everyone could make it, we understand that, so I wanted to share some of our top tips when it comes to creating a talk submission, a talk itself and also how to handle rejection. If you want to grab the slides from the weekend you can find them here.

🎉 Announcing Junior Track 🎉

Have you ever wanted to go to a conference but… weren’t sure if it was right for you? it was too expensive (usually conference tickets are $300+) weren’t sure whether you’d fit in? Enter DDD. This year, DDD has expanded to include development, design, data, and a fourth track focused on getting juniors involved in the community, and inspired beyond the norm of their usual day-to-day experience. 📣 CFP Workshop Update

Recently we announced that we’ll be running a CFP workshop but through an error in judgement we organised it to be on the afternoon of mothers day! As an event that strives to be inclusive for everyone this is something that we need to rectify, so we’ve shifted the workshop by a week to the 20th of May. Apologies for any inconvenience or confusion that this has caused people, but hopefully we’ll see you on the 20th of May!

DDD - Design, Dev, and Data

Back in 2011, HP ditched it’s flagging computer business to focus on software. Then member of the board and co-founder of famed tech investment firm Andreesson-Horowitz, Marc Andreesson reasoned in an article in the Wall Street Journal that software was eating the world. Fast forward to 2018 and his often quoted prediction is looking more and more realistic. As at March 31st, 2018 the top 10 companies in the world by market cap are occupied by 6 who are software focused, with Apple forming a contentious 7th.

🗣 DDD Sydney CFP Workshop 📰

Edit: We’ve shifted the date to the 20th of May. At DDD we have always prided ourself on being a community centric event that helps people make their leap into public speaking. After all, that’s how Aaron got into speaking! But whether it’s your first time or your tenth writing your talk proposal is a daunting task. So this year at DDD Sydney we decided that we wanted to try and help out by holding a workshop on writing submissions.

🎉 Announcing DDD Sydney 2018 🎉

OMG OMG OMG! Guess who's back for 2018 with a pretty new website! Mark your diary, DDD Sydney will be back at UTS this year on the 18th August. Our call for papers will be opening at the end of the month.https://t.co/SGRmu1GXrE — DDD Sydney (@dddsydney) April 3, 2018 That’s right folks, DDD Sydney is back for 2018! Over the last two years we’ve been quite successful, at least in our opinion, on our goal of creating a great, accessible conference for developers.
